OpenAI, the renowned creator of ChatGPT, has unveiled its latest agentic feature, Deep Research, signaling a major leap in artificial intelligence capabilities. Built on the foundation of OpenAI’s upcoming O3 model, this cutting-edge agent is designed to revolutionize how we conduct complex, multi-step research online.

What Is Deep Research?

Deep Research is an AI-powered agent that combines advanced reasoning, web browsing, and data analysis to tackle research-heavy tasks with unprecedented efficiency. By searching, interpreting, and processing vast amounts of text, images, and PDFs from the internet, this feature delivers comprehensive insights in mere minutes—a process that traditionally takes human researchers hours or even days.

According to OpenAI’s blog, Deep Research represents a significant step toward achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). “The ability to synthesize knowledge is a prerequisite for creating new knowledge. For this reason, Deep Research marks a significant step toward our broader goal of developing AGI capable of producing novel scientific research,” the company stated.

A Game-Changer for Professionals

Deep Research is tailored to meet the needs of professionals in industries like finance, science, policy, and engineering, where in-depth research is crucial. OpenAI highlights that the tool is equally useful for consumers seeking hyper-personalized recommendations for research-heavy purchases such as vehicles, appliances, or furniture.

Every report generated by Deep Research is fully documented, complete with citations and reasoning summaries to ensure accuracy and transparency. The system simplifies complex research queries, saving users time and enabling better decision-making. Users are notified when the results are ready, typically within 5 to 30 minutes. OpenAI has also teased future updates, including the addition of images, data visualizations, and analytics for a richer user experience.

CEO Sam Altman Calls It a "Superpower"

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the launch:
"Today we launch Deep Research, our next agent. This is like a superpower—experts on demand! It can use the internet, do complex research and reasoning, and give you back a report. It’s really good and can do tasks that would take hours or days and cost hundreds of dollars."

From Deep Research to Operator

This launch follows OpenAI’s recent introduction of Operator, a feature still in its early research phase. Operator demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to building AI agents capable of independently navigating the web, interacting with content, and executing user-defined tasks.

With Deep Research and Operator, OpenAI is solidifying its position as a leader in agentic AI, offering tools that not only streamline research but also pave the way for more autonomous and intelligent systems in the future.
